Course Description
This presentation provides useful information for SBA lenders who want to finance franchise businesses in a variety of industry categories. The course will explain some advantages of franchises and offer information to improve underwriting the brand. In addition, SBA lending results will be described to suggest that franchise loans suffer fewer loan defaults.
The discussion will cover an extensive list of conditions that SBA screens franchises for to avoid undesirable affiliations, and describes in detail the steps necessary to validate that SBA has approved the particular franchise agreement that your client proposes entering with your funding.
You will be able to:
- Recognize the advantages for business owners to buy a franchise company and how lenders can underwrite the brand as well as the borrower
- Identify many relationship factors with each franchise company agreement that might be interpreted as creating an affiliation
- Navigate the steps required on each transaction to verify that SBA has accepted the terms of the franchise agreement and how to work through SBA findings
- Understand the importance and priority of various information available in the Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD) and incorporate that in franchise loan underwriting
- Broaden the list of information resources that can support efforts to underwrite franchise brands

- A discussion about the inherent advantages of a franchise brand that provides for an accelerated start for a new business with a recognized and proven business plan
- Examination of SBA lending data for loans to franchise businesses and how lenders might use this data to priortize their lending efforts
- A point-by-point discussion of the 23 items contained in the Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD)
- Some best practices to underwrite both the business buying a franchise, and the franchise brand itself
- Identification of key factors that create an affiliation and how to always verify SBA’s acceptance of the latest iteration of a particular franchise agreement
